Pulsed Radiofrequency

What is Pulsed Radiofrequency?

This is a technique that creates a controlled electrical field that surrounds an electrode. It is used to treat pain. The electrode normally has the size and shape of a thin needle. Pulsed radiofrequency is a pain treatment that was developed in the middle of the 1990’s. It should not be confused with radiofrequency ablation procedures. These are pulse treatments, which implies that the energy is delivered to the electrode in an intermittent fashion.
As a result, the temperatures produced in the electrode are low, which is the opposite of what is required for ablation.

How does pulsed radiofrequency treat pain?

Researchers have both seen and have been able to demonstrate that radiofrequency when applied to some nerves can inhibit their ability to transmit pain signals. What scientists have seen up to this point is that when pulsed radiofrequency is applied to a nerve, it will only affect the part of the nerve that controls its ability to send pain signals.

Pulsed radiofrequency treatment has the most effect when it is used to treat pain that directly results from nerve damage or nerve irritation. Many have been able to receive relief from this treatment when other treatments have failed. In fact, some individuals who have had more invasive procedures, such as epidural injections, have found relief from this treatment when the epidural injection failed to provide them said relief.
