In 2006 he was board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine, subspecialty of Pain Medicine, as well as the American Academy of Family Medicine with a certificate of added qualification in Sports Medicine.

For all of Dr. Stephens life he has enjoyed sports. As a multisport high school and collegiate athlete, he believes that participating in athletics is not only beneficial to health and wellness but also teaches many life lessons. Experiencing injuries himself and observing others led to his interest in the human body and its functionality. He completed his undergraduate degree at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. After undergrad he moved to San Antonio, Texas to begin work on a Masters in Physiology. He then moved to Iowa to attend Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center. After completing his internship and residency in Family Medicine he began a Sports Medicine fellowship. During his fellowship he learned the management of multiple sports and pain conditions with numerous treatments.

Dr. Stephens then started a private practice with Orthopedics Northeast in Fort Wayne, Indiana. There he worked as a sports medicine and pain physician. In addition to clinical responsibilities, he was the team doctor for several high schools and two colleges. He then returned to Texas to work at John Peter Smith hospital as faculty for the pain/sports fellowship and department of orthopedics. He subsequently completed a fellowship at the same institution in Interventional Pain that was a combined program with John Peter Smith Hospital and UT Southwestern medical school. He has practiced in various locations in Texas ranging from Southlake to Abilene. He has also served more than 10 years as the high school team physician for Liberty Christian and Southlake.

Dr. Stephens’ love for teaching has led to him being one of the premier physician educators nationally in innovative minimally invasive procedures. His influence has also been felt teaching internationally, primarily in Australia and Asia. He currently sits on several advisory boards for minimally invasive pain procedure companies and has also had the opportunity to help research and develop many devices in the pain space. He is an active member of the American Society of Pain and Neuroscience and speaks at events and webinars frequently. He has also been the keynote speaker for various industries’ national sales meetings.

Outside of work, Dr. Stephens enjoys spending as much time as possible with his wife and four children. His family participates in mission trips and are involved in local service projects as individuals as well as with their church.
