Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy: Causes & Symptoms

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is a condition that can affect your extremities. It causes an intense, burning, painful sensation. Sometimes doctors refer to it as type I CRPS since it has the ability to affect your nerves, your skin, your bones, and your blood vessels at the same time.

Some of the first symptoms sufferers experience are sweating, sensitivity to touch, swelling, and even pathological changes in their skin and their bones.

What Causes Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy?

Doctors are still learning about the main cause of RSD. They have been studying the condition for more than a century.

Many believe it is linked to a dysfunction in the sympathetic nervous system. Yet this theory has not been confirmed.

In most patients, the condition happens because of trauma to the body or limbs. Some possible triggers for RSD include:

  • Brain Injuries
  • Fractures
  • Sprains
  • Surgery
  • Nerve Damage

If you experience some of the above-mentioned symptoms, you may be suffering from RSD. The earlier you are diagnosed, the more that can be done to prevent the syndrome from progressing. Even though there is no cure for RSD, there are treatments that can help you with the pain. One of these treatment is physical therapy.

With the right treatment, RSD pain can be managed.

What Are the Symptoms of RSD?
