Arthritis of Spine

What’s Behind Spinal Arthritis?

For individuals over the age of 50, lower back pain is often linked to arthritis of the spine. The lower back is susceptible to arthritis because it has five sets of facet joints on either side of the spinal bone. There are three primary conditions that can affect the facet joints, making them more susceptible to arthritis. They are:

Injury or Trauma

When you injure your back in an accident or as a result of trauma, your neck or your spine can start to lose cartilage at an accelerated rate. This in turn leads to an increase in pain, diminished range of motion, and discomfort.

This is a type of arthritis that is linked to the degeneration, or wear and tear, of the cartilage in between your joints. For some the degeneration of the cartilage happens over time, and for others it can happen relatively quickly.

An infection, be it from toxins inside the body, the result of an illness, or an infection from other external sources, can affect the facet joint, damaging the cartilage. When the cartilage is gone, your bones rub together, and the friction leads to pain and stiffness.

How a Pain Doctor Can Help

Spinal Arthritis – Facet Joint Arthritis Symptoms

The symptoms you experience with facet joint arthritis are very similar to those that you would see when arthritis affects other joints in the body. You should seek the help of a pain doctor if you experience the following symptoms and notice them getting worse with time:

  • Pain in the Upper or Lower Neck
  • Stiffness in the Neck or Back
  • Reduction in Your Range Of Motion, Especially in the Neck, Spine, or Hips
  • Redness at the Location of the Pain

Your chances of suffering from facet joint arthritis increase if you have a family history of this form of arthritis, you are female, you have existing or previous injuries, you are obese, or are 40 years of age and older.

Facet joint arthritis is a progressive disease that gradually eats away at your cartilage. The sooner you contact us, the better we will be able to help you manage your symptoms and pain.
