Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Fusion Surgery

The SI (Sacroiliac) joint fusion and iFuse Implant System Is intended for use during a minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion on a damaged SI joint- the joint between the ilium and the sacrum found at the lowest part of the spine. The actual procedure itself is performed in an operating room, with either general or spinal anesthesia and takes about one hour to perform.

iFuse Implant

The iFuse Implant System requires a small incision (about one to two inches long), along the side of the buttock. Using fluoroscopy- an imaging technique that provides your surgeon real-time moving images of internal structures during the procedure- the surgeon will use two or more (typically three) titanium implants to join your hip’s ilium bone and your spine’s sacrum. The ilium bone is the uppermost and largest part of the hip bone. The spine’s sacrum is located at the base of the lumbar vertebrae and is connected to the pelvis. This procedure is done with your soft tissues in mind. The surgeon will pay close attention to the surrounding areas of the SI joint to ensure no further damage is done. Over-time, natural bone will grow on and around the implants, creating a more solid and stable fusion and joint.

Recovering from an SI Joint Fusion

Rather than spending a few days in the hospital, we perform only minimally invasive surgical procedures in an outpatient setting. This means you are not required to stay over-night and can make your recovery in the comfort of your own home.
