Dr. Ahmed Tawfiq listened, was polite, and was pleasant. However, he couldn't offer any suggestions about treating my pain, other than a Medtronic pump, which is odd because I have very little pain relief with opioids. He also didn't have any suggestions about diagnosing the cause of my pain (left buttock near sit bone), and no, not all potential causes have been exhausted. Finally, he indicated that regardless of what the "medically necessary" genetic tests indicated (and the insurance companies were paying for), my pain medication wouldn't be adjusted. That seems inherently contradictory. I'm highly educated, aware of the risks of opioids, not addicted, and he knew this from talking to me for ten minutes. He seems like a nice enough man, but he wasn't invested in helping me, and he wasn't strong or courageous enough to say, "Hey, maybe the standard opiod dose or treatment isn't appropriate in this case, and I'm the doctor, not the state of Florida." The state of Florida STILL allows pain doctors to utilize their professional judgement, and claiming otherwise is not appropriate, nor fair to those of us in chronic and debilitating pain. I have had to stop working in the past couple weeks because of the severe pain; quite frankly, I'd rather keep my job and income and take a calculated risk with medication than being forced into the frightening "can't work and can't pay my bills" anxiety and depression. You medical professionals know in your heart this decision isn't right and you all need to speak up against this extreme "opioids are all bad" climate. No one has discovered or offered me an alternative to the intense pain (and you all seem to have forgotten that there are equally bad side effects and consequences to repeated corticosteroid injections, implants, surgery, high doses of Tylenol and NSAIDs, etc. I'm glad you invited my input because not being part of the solution is being part of the problem. In addition, my problem with your practice and Dr. Tawfiq isn't just the medication thing; it was the lack of investment in trying to diagnose my pelvic/buttock pain. After having been to a slew of doctors in the past year and a half, I would appreciate doctors saying, "I'm not experienced or well-read in this area, so although I wish I could help you, I just don't have the necessary education at this time." That would be far preferable to diverting or pretending. Oh, and by the way, he didn't have the name of a doctor to refer me to. (Have you ever seen Boston Legal where James Spader says to the doctor, "You took his money, didn't solve his problem, and referred him to "no one in particular?") I watched your videos, and I have to say your practice didn't live up to them, but that is no longer a surprise to me. Maybe you should take the money you spend on making videos and invest it into professional doctor education, CECs.
