At some point in your life, you may feel or experience things that seem well beyond your control which can leave us overwhelmed, anxious, and upset.  Consider individual therapy or group counseling if you are feeling any of these symptoms.  Counselors and psychologists can assist with the helplessness and difficult feelings you are experiencing.  Through counseling and psychotherapy, productive, healthier lives can be achieved.

So what exactly is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professional who specializes in psychotherapy and can assess human behavior and provide treatment.  They are highly trained professionals that can assist individuals with feelings and behaviors to obtain a healthier mentality and physical state.  They will keep your sessions and information confidential so you can talk openly about your concerns as you both work toward healing through treatment.

Psychologists are professionally trained counselors.  When looking for a psychologist, there are specific credentials you should seek out.  Psychologists obtain a degree from a college, and then generally spend several years in training and school before receiving their master’s degree.  They usually complete a clinical internship before they can practice independently.  They must also be licensed by the state in which they are practicing in.  Look for years of experience and what schooling and degrees as well as work experience they have accumulated when looking for a psychologist.

If you or someone you know needs to talk to a psychologist, there are some things you should look for.  A strong relationship between both individual and psychologist is needed for treatment to be effective.  A psychologist can be found by recommendation or through your state or local psychological association.  Be prepared to ask questions of your own in order to find the perfect fit for your needs.  Ask if they are a licensed psychologist and how many years they have been practicing.  Also, what treatments they prefer and do use, and what their areas of expertise is, what their fees are and what insurance do they accept.  These questions will help find the professional you need to help accomplish your goals to a healthier you.

Another element to searching for the perfect psychologist is to schedule an interview.  Ask to talk either in person or via telephone.  As a potential client, you have the right to ask questions and to acquire a general “feel” for how the two of you will work together.  Let them know your reasons for seeking help.  This will also help the psychologist understand if their area of expertise is what you need in order to heal.  It is recommended that you select at least two options for psychologists and talk to them both.  This provides more options and can provide a professional who can help you more effectively.  Gender may or may not play a factor in your choice of a professional.  Are you more comfortable in speaking to a person of the same gender?  Keep this in mind when asking about certain professionals.  Make sure you feel comfortable around your psychologist and can open up to them.  Any feelings of hesitation, lack of trust, or uncomfortableness should be acknowledged and a new professional should be sought.
