What Causes Trigeminal Neuralgia?
The condition arises from a compression of the trigeminal nerve that links your brain to your face and mouth. All the sensation felt on your face, teeth and mouth are transmitted to your brain through this vital nerve, and the compression is usually attributed to pressure from a nearby blood vessel affecting the nerve. The compression could also be a result of a tumor or even multiple sclerosis.
Since the nerve is compressed, any additional pressure on it tends to accelerate the pain. In fact, the painful attacks are induced by activities involving touching your face (even lightly); for instance:
- Brushing your teeth
- Eating
- Washing your face
- Vigorously moving your head or face
