We target the pain, where it originates, and work to lessen the discomfort for the long haul. We’ve achieved much success with procedures like lumbar epidural steroid injections and nerve blocks, but those involve injections and medications that some patients don’t necessarily want to deal with if possible.

We want to make everyone comfortable during their pain relief regimen, so our doctors in Tampa have created a well-rounded pain management environment to make that happen. Our non-drug therapies are called non-pharmacological procedures.

Non-Pharmacological Pain Relief Therapies

Acupuncture: This therapy involves lightly sticking needles into the skin or tissues to alleviate pain and treat various physical, mental, and emotional conditions.

Acupressure: This therapy is essentially the same as acupuncture, but without the needles. It is also known as shiatsu massage.

Aromatherapy: Using scents from oils, candles, flowers, herbs and candles to help relax, relieve stress, and decrease pain.

Ice & Heat: First, ice helps to reduce swelling and pain. Hold an ice pack or ice wrapped in a towel directly over the injury or painful spot periodically throughout the day. Second, apply heat the next day or so to promote blood flow, healing and pain relief.

Massage therapy: Massages relax muscles and ligaments which can decrease pain.

Physical therapy: Exercises to increase strength and improve movement and mobility.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS): This is a portable, pocket-sized, battery-powered device that attaches to your skin that uses mild, safe electrical signals to help control pain.

Guided symbolism: The art of placing pictures in your mind that will make pain less intense, potentially altering the way your body deals with pain.

Laughter: Laughter has been known to help people eradicate stress, anger, fear, and depression.

Music: Energy levels, like those created with music/soundwaves in the air, are proven to lighten your mood and reduce pain by triggering endorphins – the body’s natural pain reliever.

This stuff really works.

These non-drug pain relief management options are overseen by our doctors and experienced medical staff. Just because they don’t involve surgery or medication, it should not be assumed they don’t work. These are tried-and-true ways to lessen pain and live happier.
