Question: What is a headache?
Mrs. Gozzola: Headaches affect persons of all levels of society and may present with varying characteristics. The most common type of headache usually seen in the clinical setting is migraine. Remember, there is no such thing as a regular headache.
Question: How do I know if my headache is migraine?
Mrs. Gozzola: Migraine symptoms usually, but not always, present with some similar symptoms. One sided headache, meaning unilateral or right or left side of the head. Many people have pain beginning in the neck area. Other characteristics include a feeling of pressure, nausea, light, sound or smell sensitivity. Most symptoms appear gradually and it is often difficult for my patient to remember when their headaches started.
Question: I tried my friend’s headache medication and it did not work. Does that mean I don’t have migraines?
Mrs. Gozzola: Be good to yourself and see a headache specialist! Proper evaluation, and education, as well as a plan custom fitted for your headache will bring faster results and a better life. Migraines, if not treated properly, may progress in intensity and frequency, making them harder to manage.
